Tip: Can you have a personal networking style?
The Indeed
website in their career guide section offers lots of good networking tips, but we don’t think this one is completely possible:
“Find a suitable networking style. Different networking tactics work for different people. To find the best networking method for yourself, you may want to try a few different tactics. For example, an introvert may wish to network one on one over coffee or attend events with fewer attendees.”
This would be nice if it was doable, but life doesn’t work that way. There are conferences, meetings, networking ‘must show up’ events and social events where networking in a crowd is required.
So even if you don’t like any of those situations, it is good to remind yourself of these three things so you can network with less anxiety.
1. Attitude: I don’t like these types of networking situations but lots of other people in this room feel exactly the same way I do (there are lots of other introverts!). I will turn off the spotlight of self-consciousness. Remember: not everyone is staring at me!
2. Be helpful: I won’t think of networking as ‘what I can get from the other person’, instead I will make it my job to discover what I might be able to do for that stranger I’ve just met.
3. Chill: Not every interaction I have must be a slam dunk. I won’t be so invested in the outcome of every interaction.
