Tip: Why don’t people want to talk to one and other?
Of all the reasons people don’t like networking, this is the biggest one: Starting a conversation with a stranger can be awkward.
Why is that?
It’s a social phenomenon called mutual pluralist ignorance. This is how behavioral psychologist Nicholas Epley explains it, “Everyone is willing to talk but thinks everyone else is unwilling.” As a result, most people remain silent.
So, if you use this interesting, and relatively unknown social phenomenon to your benefit, you will be the one to start the conversation. It won’t seem as daunting.
And even more fascinating is that research shows we overestimate how awkward or unpleasant it would be to start a conversation with a stranger. Most people find it to be a positive experience.
From now on when you are walking into a networking event, a meeting, a social event, keep this thought in mind, “People actually do want to talk but someone has to start the conversation…and I guess that’s going to be me.”
