Tip: A surprising way to deal with networking rejection.
Best-selling author Mark Manson in his weekly newsletter, “Your Next Breakthrough”, said this recently: “One of the most beneficial traits in love and in life: be nearly impossible to offend.” Mark’s advice is “make a conscious choice to stop being upset or offended".
A good place to practice this is in networking situations. Rejection, or fear of rejection, is a real thing when it comes to networking. The following scenarios have happened to many of us:
- You approach someone and they look at you suspiciously—why are you talking to me?
- You are talking with someone and they aren’t focused on you, they are looking around the room for someone more important.
- They make you feel like you’re not someone they have any interest in engaging in conversation.
- The list goes on…
Go to that next networking event remembering what First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt said, “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”
