Tip: Mini Ghosting that we may not realize we are doing

Ghosting is usually defined as when someone intentionally cuts off communication with a person they have a relationship with (or met on a dating site). But ghosting happens in the work world as well. It’s usually unintentional. Everyone is just so busy that they ignore emails or messages that could be responded to in less than a minute, and would actually save everyone time, and make our interactions better.

Here's an example: I was speaking at a client’s regional meeting and left my dongle and remote slide changer in the laptop used for the presentations that day. I emailed the person who owned the laptop and asked if they wouldn’t mind popping it in the mail. I didn’t hear back from them, so maybe they didn’t have it? I sent a second email a few days later. Still no response.

A week later the dongle and remote arrived in the mail. I understand that I was the one who forgot that dongle, but a reply to my first email could have said, “Got it. Will send.” We could have saved that second email — me writing it, that person receiving it.

So, what did I do once the items were back in my possession? End of the story? No, I did the right thing and closed the loop and sent that individual a short thank you email.

Have you unintentionally ghosted someone? Why not take a moment to email that person a quick response now.
