Tip: What your LinkedIn connecting may be missing.
LinkedIn, which is the preeminent business network, is something many of us take for granted. Some folks think it’s enough to ask someone to connect with them on LinkedIn, and then once the invite is accepted, that’s it. That should be the start.
Here is what to continue doing:
1. Comment on their posts, and not just a thumbs up. Make it a meaningful message.
2. Repost anything they post if you think your LinkedIn network would like it. Or post on your X/Twitter page.
3. Learn more about them by reading their LinkedIn page. There is lots of interesting information. What groups, associations do they follow, where have they worked before. etc.?
4. Google them to learn more.
5. Maybe an email is a good idea. Look to see if their email address is on their LinkedIn page. Did you recently meet them at an event, a conference? Reference that in your email. But before sending any email first ask yourself: Is this email worth sending to a busy person? If not, don’t hit the send button.
6. But don’t be afraid to message someone via LinkedIn. We have found that some people don’t answer emails, but they answer LinkedIn messages. If you have established some kind of connection with them by doing steps 1 through 5, then they will recognize you and hopefully respond.
