Tip: Why do you need to break the ice?
The first words out of your mouth, whether to a stranger or someone you don’t know well, are called icebreakers. Those opening lines of small talk help warm up the conversation and demonstrate to the other person that:
- you are a friendly, safe person to talk to
- you seem likeable
- you seem interested in them
You will be successful in setting up a positive impression by doing this: As you are approaching someone at a networking event decide that you are going to like that person. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
