Tip: What will transform your growth trajectory?

“Breaking the mold: Five behaviors of leading growth transformers” (McKinsey, December 16, 2024) is a good article to jumpstart your thinking for 2025. Of these five management practices which is the top one to achieve profitable growth?

It’s the practice of "Business Partnerships" which distinguished the growth transformers from their peers. “They use external partnerships to fuel growth.” These leaders realize their growth ambition requires skills, capabilities, and offerings that are effectively held by a partner.”

Dr. Hermina Ibarra describes these strategic networks as lateral and vertical relationships, and often with power players a level above. “Strategic networking plugs aspiring leaders into a set of relationships (diverse affiliations, backgrounds, objectives) reoriented externally and to the future.”

After a number of years of lost connectivity, this is a good time to harness new partner relationships to achieve your organization’s goals. Reach out, get referrals/introductions through your six degrees of connection (actually two or three degrees is usually very effective). Stretch beyond your usual networking efforts into the community (volunteer on community boards), sit on committees at your business organizations and affiliations, attend more events and conferences where business partnerships may be found.

In 2025 reorient your networking efforts externally and look to the future.

To learn more about strategic networks, we highly recommend Ibarra and Hunter’s classic Harvard Business Review article, "How Leaders Create and Use Networks".
